10 Steps to a Beautiful Lawn
Step 1. The very first thing you need to do is select the right type of grass for your area. Step 2. Once you have selected the turf variety, you will need to prepare your site. You can do this by removing all existing lawn and weeds (spray with Roundup 14 days before laying new turf), excavate the existing area if uneven or levels are higher than pathways or driveways. If your soil quality is poor (clay based or too sandy) purchase a good quality top soil from your local garden store. Quantity of soil required for every 100 sq metres is between 5 and 10 tonnes, which will give you a depth of 25mm to 50mm. Read More Tips On Site Preparation
Step 3. Next you will need to measure your lawn area to determine how much turf you will need in square metres. You can do this by multiplying the width by the height. For odd shaped yards, draw a plan and draw rectangles over the area and add up the total in square metres.
Step 4. Purchase your turf from your preferred lawn and turf supplier. If you don't have a preferred supplier, here is a list of some Sydney Turf Wholesalers. Save money by purchasing your turf rolls direct from the turf grower and save time by having the turf delivered right to your door.
Step 5. Pick up the turf rolls or arrange delivery on the very same day that you are ready to install your new lawn. Turf is a living, breathing plant and needs to be installed immediately once cut. The turf needs to be bought into contact with the topsoil and moisture as soon as possible.

Unroll the turf across the area in a staggered pattern (similar to bricklaying). If the ground is sloped, align the pattern across the slope. This minimizes the possibility of trenches forming between the rolls. Make sure the turf rolls are butted tightly together. Avoid leaving gaps or overlapping. Gaps will allow air to get in between the rolls and dry the edges out. Use an old kitchen knife to cut sod to fit around sprinklers or in odd-shaped areas. Fill in any large spaces between pieces of turf with soil.
Step 7. Water newly installed turf frequently. In hot weather, you may have to water more than once a day. The turf should receive 25mm water daily. When the turf has rooted into the soil (usually 10 – 14 days) the lawn should receive 25mm of water per week. Step 8. For healthy, vigorous good looking lawn, Fertilising Your Turf every 6 – 8 weeks is crucial. A healthy fertilized lawn remains uniform and maintains its original grass species and is weed free.
